The scent of hot milk and spices drifted down the hallway, but 16-year-old Max didn't need an alarm. His internal radar was already tuned to the kitchen. It had started two weeks into his exchange program. Mamu had offered him a flat, golden-brown biscuit printed with that tiny, iconic picture of a child. Max dipped it into his tea, waited two seconds and took a bite. That was the point of no return. While most teenagers snuck out for fast food, Max was secretly hoarding rectangular yellow wrappers in his jacket pockets. On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, Max walked into the living room to find Mamu standing next to the dining table with a look of pure mischief. "Max, come here," she called out. On the table sat a massive, brown cardboard box. Max approached it cautiously, like an archaeologist discovering a chest of treasure. He pulled back the tape and peered inside.
It wasn't just a few packs. It was a wholesale supply crate-level, pantry-busting stacks of Parle-G. "I noticed you were finishing a pack every two days," Mamu laughed, leaning against the doorway. "I figured this might hold you over until Friday." Max stared at the golden mountain in total, stunned silence. For a full ten seconds, the usually loud 16-year-old was rendered completely speechless. "Mamu," Max said, his voice dropping into deadpan reverence. "You have just secured your place in the host mom Hall of Fame. I would jump in front of a bus for you." "Just don't drop crumbs on the rug," she warned, though she was already smiling.
By nightfall, Max had established a strict tactical command center in his bedroom. Two packs were staged on his desk for late-night studying, three were tucked into his school backpack as emergency rations and a master reserve was safely stashed under his bed. Later that evening, Mamu walked past his room and peeked inside. Max was sitting cross-legged on the floor, completely absorbed in a video game. In his left hand, balanced with the precision of a surgeon, was a single Parle-G, hovering precisely one millimeter above a steaming mug. He didn't even look up as he muttered, "1.5 seconds... perfect structural integrity." Mamu just shook her head, chuckled and closed the door.
