Matthew had just navigated the treacherous, mud-caked terrain of flood-affected Dhading, dodging landslides and wading through swollen streams, but nothing prepared him for the intense salon operation taking place on the living room rug back in Kathmandu. His host mom had just returned from the local market, proudly dropping two vibrant green packets of heena onto the table one designated for Eliza and the other for Audrey. The moment those packets were snipped open, the room filled with the sharp, earthy perfume of crushed leaves and essential oils. Eliza and Audrey immediately got to work, meticulously mapping out elegant vines and intricate mandalas. Matthew, sitting on the couch with every intention of reading his book, found his eyes drifting from the pages to the squeeze-cones. The level of precision was mesmerizing it was like watching tiny, fragrant watercolors applied with surgical grace.
You're staring, Matthew," Eliza said, without looking up from a lotus pattern on Audrey's palm. "I'm just observing the mechanics of it," Matthew defended smoothly, leaning forward. "It's an ancient art form. Purely artistic interest." "Sure it is," Audrey laughed. "Want one?" "Absolutely not. I have a professional reputation to uphold," he said, right before adding, "...Although, theoretically, how hard can it be?" Ten minutes later, the book was forgotten and Matthew was on his knees in the middle of the rug, gripping a heena packet like a tube of industrial caulk. Audrey generously sacrificed a small patch of her forearm for his "scientific attempt."
What followed was a masterclass in chaotic creativity. While Eliza's hand looked like an authentic piece of Nepalese temple art, Matthew's attempt looked remarkably like a squiggly, confused dragon wearing a top hat. But as he sat there, laughing till his sides hurt while trying to fix a lopsided leaf, the magic of the moment hit him. The warmth of the house, the smell of the paste drying on skin, the easy banter and the sheer joy of a quiet afternoon in Nepal felt far more real than any flight schedule back home. When the girls finally washed off the dry paste to reveal the rich orange-red stains underneath, Matthew looked at the goofy little mark he'd tested on his own wrist. He realized right then that Nepal wasn't just a place he was visiting it was a feeling he was completely unprepared to leave behind.
