The low wooden rafters of the homestay were warm in the fading light, filled with the rich aroma of fresh dal bhat simmering on the stove. Andy sat on the woven floor mat in Sakar's living room, staring down at his phone screen. On it was the digital boarding pass for his flight back home to China. His packed suitcase sat heavy against the wall near the doorway, but his mind was completely anchored right where he was. Months living in Sakar's homestay had unraveled the constant rush Andy had carried for years.
He had arrived expecting a brief stay, but the quiet mornings spent sharing tea with Sakar, the family's endless hospitality and the easy rhythm of life in Nepal had changed everything. The thought of stepping onto that plane and returning to his old routine felt like giving up a piece of himself. Sakar walked into the room, wiping his hands on a kitchen cloth and glanced at the packed bag by the door. "Andy, the taxi driver just called," Sakar said gently. "He's waiting at the end of the alley to take you to the airport. If you don't head down now, you'll miss the check-in window." Andy looked down at his watch, watching the seconds tick forward. He looked at Sakar, then at the cozy room that had felt more like home over the past few months than anywhere else.
He knew what missing this flight meant. It meant lost money, explanations to his family and a long trip to the immigration office tomorrow morning for a visa extension. It meant complete administrative chaos. Slowly, Andy reached down, turned his phone face-down on the rug and slid it under a cushion. "Tell him to go, Sakar," Andy said quietly, looking up with a clear, steady smile. "I'm not going to the airport."
