Stepping Past the Tourist Facade
Just outside the busy rhythm of Kathmandu lies a place where mythology, nature and spirituality meet—Taudaha Lake.
According to the legend of the Kathmandu Valley, when Manjushri Bodhisattva opened the waters of the ancient lake to make it suitable for human settlement, the serpent king Karkotak Naga and other serpent beings were believed to have moved from the valley. Taudaha is considered to be the sacred home where Karkotak Naga found refuge.
Even today, standing beside the peaceful waters of Taudaha, one can feel the presence of an ancient world. The lake itself has a unique shape resembling the map of the Kathmandu Valley. During migration seasons, birds travel from distant regions, including Siberia, making the lake an important wildlife refuge.
A short journey from Taudaha takes you towards Pharping, where Hindu and Buddhist traditions exist side by side. The sacred Asura Cave, associated with Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche), represents the deep roots of Vajrayana Buddhism. Nearby, the revered Shesh Narayan Temple reflects the Hindu tradition, creating a powerful example of the harmony that has existed in Nepal for centuries.
